Quick Look: The Adventures of Johnny Bunko (The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need) by Daniel Pink

Fierce Bookshelf, Uncategorized No Comments »

Daniel Pink, the author of Free Agent Nation and the bestseller A Whole New Mind, has a new book. Actually, it’s not so much a book as a graphic novel (that’s the current name for a comic book). It’s a fable told in the form of a Japanese manga. Here’s the career advice Johnny got from his magical manga adviser Diana:

  1. There is no plan.
  2. Think strengths, not weaknesses.
  3. It’s not about you.
  4. Persistence trumps talent.
  5. Make excellent mistakes.
  6. Leave an imprint.

None of this is revolutionary. You’ve probably heard it all before. But here’s why you might want to take a look at the book anyway.

  1. It only takes half an hour to read.
  2. The manga format reinforces what Pink said in A Whole New Mind about moving from information to conceptual thinking.
  3. The manga format brings a bit of life and power to the annoying business fable genre.
  4. It only takes half an hour to read.

The advice in this book will not change your life, but I walked away thinking that the whole-form plus content-was somehow interesting and provocative. And it only takes half an hour to read.
